IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION
Manitoba Public Insurance's (MPI) Permits and Compliance team has advised Red River College Polytechnic of an upcoming change to their Driver Instructor Permit requirements that will take effect on October 1, 2026.
Effective October 1, 2026, ALL APPLICANTS will be required to successfully complete both the Commercial Driving Instructor (CDI) Knowledge Test and the CDI Road Test before enrolling in a Driver Instructor Training Course.
Permits and Compliance will review your driving record and driving experience to determine whether you meet this part of the qualifications for a Driving Instructor Permit. Applicants who meet the requirements will be authorized to attempt the CDI Knowledge and Road Tests.
Please note:
- Applicants are allowed a maximum of two attempts for each test.
- For the purpose of submitting a Driver Instructor Permit application, successful CDI test results must be no more than 12 months old. Test results that exceed 12 months from the application submission date to Permits and Compliance will not be accepted, and the CDI tests must be retaken.
Applicants who successfully pass bot CDI tests will be notified by email and will become eligible to apply for the Driver Instructor Training Program at Red River College Polytechnic.
Currently, the RRC Polytech School of Continuing Education has not scheduled the next intake for the Driver Instructor Training Program. We recommend waiting until a course has been announced before submitting a Driving Record Confirmation application to MPI to determine your eligibility to attempt the CDI tests.
The May 2026 intake for the Driver Instructor Training program has been postponed.
Currently we are not certain when there will be another intake of the program before January 2027 but please check back for more information.
Description
The Driver Instructor Training program is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and expertise necessary to become a Class 5 driving instructor. You will gain the ability to train beginners in how to operate a vehicle or to help individuals upgrade their driving abilities. You will develop skills to instruct, integrate safety and defensive driving techniques, and interpret sections of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act.

Limits - The student is responsible for managing the timelines set by
Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) to qualify for and maintain the Manitoba
Driver Training Permit.

Instructor Permit - Successful completion of the Driver Instructor
Training program meets the education and examination requirements for the
Class 5 Manitoba Driver Training Permit. Applicants must also demonstrate
to MPI that they meet MPI's defined licensing, experience, and other
