Admission Requirements

Your Academic History
If your academic history includes any of the following, please visit My Education for important information: post-secondary studies at an institution other than Red River College Polytechnic; Modified (M), English as an Additional Language (E), or GED high school courses; or home schooling; international secondary (high school) studies.

  • Click on your application, then Supplemental Items & Documents.

Submission of required documentation indicating proof of completion of admission requirements is due within 15 days of applying unless otherwise noted in the program's admission requirements.

However, if you apply within 6 weeks of the program start date, admission requirements are due within 5 days of applying.

Not all Red Seal and designated trades are considered teachable technical vocational subject areas in Manitoba provincial secondary schools. A listing of Red Seal and designated trades can be found on the Apprenticeship Manitoba website

Regular Admission Requirements

After reviewing these admission requirements, apply here

  1. Grade 12
    • Submit proof of graduation from or enrolment in Grade 12
    • If you provide proof of enrolment at time of application, your official final grades indicating successful completion must be submitted by July 15 for fall enrolment or by the deadline specified in your admission letter
    • If you do not meet this admission requirement, contact RRC's Teacher Education department to discuss a plan for meeting the regular admission requirements before applying to this program.
    • If you are required to complete an English language assessment, do not submit your transcripts until requested to do so.  See English Language Requirements (ELRs) for more information.

  2. English Language Requirements (ELRs)
    • Have you successfully completed the equivalent of three years of full-time secondary (high school) education in Canada, the United States, or an ELR exempt country where English was the language of instruction? To view a list of ELR exempt countries click here.
      • If yes, you appear to meet English language requirements. Submit your transcripts for verification purposes.
        or
      • If no, you are required to submit proof of meeting an English language requirements option.  If you choose to complete an English language assessment, review this program's approved assessments and required levels.
        or
      • If you completed all of your education in Canada, the United States, or an ELR exempt country in English but did not complete three years of high school, submit your transcripts for review
        and 
  3. Training and Work Experience
    • Submit proof of following training and work experience:
      • Red Seal Trades
        -  A certificate of qualification (journeyperson’s certificate or equivalent to a Manitoba trade specific credential as determined by Apprenticeship Manitoba)
        - Two years of approved trade experience from the documented date of receiving the approved trade credential
        - The Red Seal endorsement is required for a Permanent Special Vocational Certificate issued by Manitoba Education Professional Certification Branch upon graduation from this program.
        or
      • Designated Trades
        - A certificate of qualification (journeyperson’s certificate or equivalent to a Manitoba trade specific credential as determined by Apprenticeship Manitoba)
        - Two years of approved trade experience from  the documented date of receiving the approved trade credential
        or
      • Non-designated Trades
        - At least one year of formal training (can be included in the six years of work experience)
        - At least six years of approved work experience including two years under the supervision of a person who holds an approved credential or has approved training in the trade
    • In Manitoba:
      • Construction Electricians and Industrial Electricians must also hold a Journeyperson Electrician License issued by the Mechanical and Engineering Branch of Manitoba Labour and Immigration. This license must be renewed every four years
      • Early Childhood Educators must hold an ECE III designation

    • Post-secondary transcripts must have been issued within 6 months prior to your application date, and submitted in a sealed envelope directly from the post-secondary institution.
      and
  4. Letters of Reference
    • Submit a minimum of two letters of reference that confirm recent work experience in your area of specialty (trade) obtained after the completion of qualification* (journeyperson's certificate or equivalent to a Manitoba trade specific credential as determined by Apprenticeship Manitoba), or formal training (non-designated trades)
      and
  5. Personal Resume
    • Submit a personal resume

  6. Applicant Declaration for Check Documents Form
  7. Candidate Information and Verification Meeting
    • The candidate meeting is an important part of the admission process, as it allows both the applicant and representatives of Teacher Education to discuss:
      • Submitted documentation
      • Credit for acceptable education
      • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) opportunities
      • Manitoba Education’s professional certification requirements
      • Details of the program, including expectations of both in-class and mentorship experiences
      • The applicant's interests and strengths relative to this teachable subject area
    • Applicants should allow one hour for the conversation
    • Meetings are arranged by the Teacher Education office once all admissions documentation is received by Enrolment Services
    • This item is not due within 15 days of applying and will be requested by the College at a later date

Program Progression Requirements
Program progression requirements are not due within 15 days of applying. These requirements have expiration dates and should be completed close to your program start date. Further information will be provided by the College at a later date.

Prior to registration into your practicum placement, you will be required to submit the following:

  • An original official Adult Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Search (ACRVS)
  • An original official Child Abuse Registry (CAR) Check (provincial)

If you have a criminal record you may not be able to complete the program.

If you are listed on a Child Abuse Registry you will not be able to complete the program.
