This program is designed to introduce Indigenous students to college and career exploration by acquiring greater success in life skills, reading, writing, mathematics, science and technology while focusing on individual, cultural and career development. Various instructional strategies and methodologies will be utilized to focus on the holistic approach in the development of individual competencies.

Submission of required documentation indicating proof of completion of admission requirements is due within 30 days of applying unless otherwise noted in the program's admission requirements.

However, if you apply within 6 weeks of the program start date, admission requirements are due within 5 days of applying.

Regular Admission Requirements

  1. Grade 12
    • Submit proof of graduation from or enrolment in Grade 12, including one credit in each of the following:
      • Grade 12 English
      • Grade 12 Math
    • If you provide proof of enrolment at time of application, your official final grades indicating successful completion must be submitted by July 15 for fall enrolment or by the deadline specified in your admission letter.
    • If you are required to complete an English language assessment, do not submit your transcripts until requested to do so.  See English Language Requirements (ELRs) for more information.

    • Answer this question to determine if you meet this program’s ELRs:
      Have I successfully completed 3 years of full-time high school (secondary) education in Canada, the United States, or an ELR exempt country where English was the language of instruction?

      • If NO, submit proof of meeting an ELRs option.  If you choose the English language assessment option, review this program's approved assessments and required levels.

    • Successfully complete a prescribed English and math skills assessment at the minimum competency level required
    • This item is not due within 30 days of applying and will be requested by the College at a later date

Mature Student Admission Requirements
If you are 19 years of age or older and have been out of high school for a minimum of one year at time of application, and you do not meet the regular admission requirements, you may apply under the Mature Student admission requirements.

  • High school graduation is not required, but you must successfully meet Regular Admission Requirements 2 and 3

The Official CanTEST was discontinued in 2021, and as of October 20, 2021 the RRC CanTEST is no longer offered at RRC Polytechnic. Please note the Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) program requires the Official CanTEST (The RRC Institutional CanTEST will not be accepted).

Password Skills (An in person English Language Assessment hosted by RRC Polytech)
This in-person, computer-based test is composed of four test modules: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The test takes 3 hours and 5 minutes to complete and is conducted in two parts. The first part assesses reading, listening, and writing, and the second part assesses speaking in a separate room. Password Skills costs $135 to take through RRC Polytech. Password Skills is hosted by the RRC Polytech Testing and Assessment Centre: E440, Manitou a bi Bii Daziigae building, on the fourth floor. If you wish to do Password Skills remotely (not in-person), Password Skills Plus can be taken online. RRC Polytech does not offer Password Skills Plus, but we do accept the results for entry into program.

You should enroll in this program if you wish to strengthen your skills in reading, writing, mathematics, science and technology, and are looking to further develop your essential academic skills and aptitudes, while exploring the different Red River College Polytechnic programs that are available in order to make informed career decisions. Red River College Polytechnic is a participating institution in the HigherEdPoints program. Through this program, students are able to convert Aeroplan® Miles and TD Points into funds to help cover their tuition. Family members and friends can also contribute to a student’s education by converting their loyalty points - anyone can donate their points to an individual student.

Students will have an opportunity to discover who they are as an Indigenous person by discovering their gifts, strengths and talents through culture, history and community. Students will examine traditional value systems and how to apply traditional knowledge in modern day society.

Students will focus on exploring their Indigenous identity. They will have the opportunity to explore local, community-based, provincial and national issues to understand the modern landscape as it pertains to Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations. Students will enhance their personal and professional identity by learning about, and with, various local Indigenous communities. Students will have opportunity to express their cultural identities and consider how to contribute to cultural revitalization and community wellness. Students will explore local Indigenous worldviews, values and belief systems and will learn about Indigenous perspectives through the perspectives of local histories.

Any realistic career planning must begin with developing a better understanding of oneself. The purpose of this course is to provide students with instruction in the career planning process directly related to the selection of a college program and ultimately the world of work. Topics include a comprehensive skills assessment, identification of work and personal values, career interests, work and learning styles, and personality types related to college programs and academic success. As the course progresses, students will begin to develop areas of interests related to college programs and future career paths. Each student will complete a project to investigate occupations that are of interest to them. The student will begin to use information to evaluate to what extent their career interests realistically math their skills and qualities. The project will also assist students with planning the academic requirements associated with the career direction they have chosen. Each student, as part of their project, will develop career/occupational goals and academic plans.

Employability skills are those fundamental skills necessary for obtaining, keeping, and being successful in a job. Many students require purposefully structured experiences and instruction to guide them in understanding their own capabilities, their opinions, the adaptations they will need and the general employability skills they need to be successful in the workplace. These skills encompass personal appearance, social skills, teamwork, dependability, organization and work ethic. The ability to acquire and maintain employment depends heavily on the general employability skills students will learn in this course. The course will also introduce students to the e-portfolio, the Red River College LEARN Management System, and Microsoft Word as a word processing system.

Students will develop academic language skills and abilities in the areas of listening, reading, speaking, writing and presenting. Students will be engaged in a variety of learning situations that will enhance their communication abilities through applied learning activities and opportunities. Integration of literary and cultural works from various First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities will be the curriculum foundation for skills building.

Everyone communicates, but are they doing it well? Communicative competence takes practice and self-awareness. By developing their communication skills, the student will improve their interpersonal ability, intercultural competence, and digital fluency to prepare the student for success in the workplace. In Communication Strategies, the student will learn through discovery and project-based activities to practice approaching situations critically and collaboratively. The strategies the student will gain in this course will be useful throughout their program and in their chosen industry.

Online learning is a critical component of course delivery in all Red River College Polytechnic programs. To ensure each student has the tools they need to achieve their academic goals, all Red River College Polytechnic students require, at minimum:

• Recommended minimum speed: 10 mbps for download, 3 mbps for upload
