Description

The Medical Laboratory Sciences program is your path to becoming a certified Medical Laboratory Technologist. As a Medical Laboratory Technologist you will be responsible for collecting, preparing, and analyzing blood, body fluids, and tissue samples, and interpreting results. This is a comprehensive program that requires dedication and commitment to develop proficient knowledge and skill in the five disciplines of laboratory work; Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Histology, Clinical Microbiology, and Transfusion Science. You will also be expected to gain proficiency at drawing blood samples from patients.

The program starts out with three full academic terms over 1.5 years at the Notre Dame Campus in Winnipeg. It begins with theory and practical foundations in which you will learn how to obtain accurate and precise patient results with the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment.

Following completion of all of the didactic courses within the program, students will participate in a clinical practicum-taking place over a full year. The practical training component takes place in diagnostic labs where you will be interacting with patients and health care workers to obtain the laboratory skills necessary for success.

This is an intensive and demanding program. Academic courses will be delivered in a blended fashion, with both face-to-face and online components.  Students will be required to attend on campus labs at the Notre Dame campus in Winnipeg.  Several hours will be required each day to attend classes, study, read textbooks, view videos, complete assignments and lab reports, perform quizzes, and prepare presentations. Your progress will be evaluated by theory and practical examinations and competency-based objectives.

This program also helps prepare students to write the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences Certification (CSMLS) exam. Passing this exam is a requirement for all Canadian Medical Laboratory Technologists.
