Communication Management provides business, project management and leadership training tailored to professional communicators. In it, graduates of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations programs and other professional communicators develop a deeper understanding of why and how business decisions are made – making them a greater asset to workplace teams, projects, and management. Program graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience to lead communication projects and teams in a professional setting.
Please note that this program is offered part time in the evening. Courses are offered online, weekday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Undeclared Part-Time Students - An Undeclared Student is an applicant who would like to take courses for professional development or general interest and is not seeking a credential. Students are restricted to taking a maximum of 2 courses per term, and after successfully completing 4 courses they must apply and be admitted to a program before registering for additional courses. In this course, you will build the business acumen to help you understand how and why management makes business decisions. You will learn how to offer valuable communications advice, make the case for communication investment, and demonstrate communications' business value to management. Topics that will be covered in this course include: fundamentals of macroeconomics and major economic indicators; government's role and impact as a regulator; the intersection of business, government and politics; the stock market; basics of microeconomics and financial management within the organization; organizational structure; and impacts of communication on the bottom line.
In this course, you will learn how to create communication strategies that address the wide range of stakeholder motivations affecting an organization. You will also be taught how to propose and deliver communications that are aligned with organizational goals, employing the Management by Objectives approach to stakeholder relations. You will be prepared to appreciate cultural, political and other differences that inform stakeholders' positions and perceptions and to communicate effectively with them to advance organizational objectives.
In this course, you will develop advanced skills in digital content strategy, creation and measurement specific to the Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations industries. Topics covered in this course include specialized videography, photography, and digital media design; multi-platform distribution; designing, collecting and acting on data analytics both mid-stream and at the end of a project.
In this course, you will learn how to apply advanced media strategy using an integrated Advertising and Public Relations approach. Topics covered in this course include evaluating traditional media opportunities; evolving developments in how media placements are sold; opportunities and approaches to media buying on digital platforms; integrating digital advertising with earned media in campaigns.
In this course you will build a solid understanding of the lines between the law and organizational, professional, and personal ethics. You will also be introduced to a decision-making framework to uphold and promote high standards of integrity. This course addresses developing professional approaches to the workplace that yield efficient use of time and resources, functional working groups, and successful navigation of challenging situations; cross-departmental collaboration; becoming a communications leader; mentorship and life-long learning. Topics include laws specifically pertaining to organizational communications; the "lawyers vs. communicators" balance; creating an internal risk-identification network; organizational crisis readiness; personal morals, ethics and the law: the communicator's role and responsibilities.
This course equips you with the knowledge, insights, and tools necessary to professionally, effectively, and efficiently propose and manage large-scale communications projects. Topics that will be covered in this course include practices of professional project management: project visioning; securing management/client support; planning; scheduling and logistics; budgeting; team leadership; working with agencies, clients and contractors; evaluation; reporting.
In this course, you will apply your knowledge and the project management skills you developed previously in the post-graduate diploma program to independently plan a major communication campaign or project of your choosing (subject to faculty approval). This project will be of the sort a professional communicator might undertake in the regular course of business for a real-life client. You will also design, pitch, strategize, and create a professional workflow for the project.
In this course, you will independently execute a major communication campaign or project of your choosing (subject to faculty approval), of the sort a professional communicator might undertake in the regular course of business, for a real-life client. You will design, pitch, strategize, implement, and evaluate the project; provide status reporting; and then prepare a final report and formal presentation of the project's execution and outcomes. Course delivery will combine classroom instruction, one-on-one mentoring, group work and independent research and execution.
In this course, you will develop foundational knowledge in organizational responsibilities with respect to public reporting; legal requirements of public, private, and non-profit entities; partnerships and alliances in business. You will build skills in multidisciplinary problem-solving and examine real-life case studies in depth to articulate the business factors {including economic, political, and community pressure; government/regulator expectations; and legal considerations) that contributed to an organization's controversial business decision and how they influenced its outcomes. You will research, report and present on specific cases, connecting the contributing factors to the business outcomes, and analyze the communications fallout.
Students enrolling in Part-Time and Online Education courses may be required to purchase textbooks and materials at participating Campus Store locations or online at bookstore.rrc.ca. Student booklists will be available approximately 3 weeks prior to scheduled course start dates. Please ensure materials are purchased in advance, to be available for the start date.

This is an $1000 award given annually to a student who demonstrates exceptional effort and/or the ability to lead, organize and engage students or members of the community in embodying the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism and social justice.
The successful recipient will be a community activist, advocate or leader who has worked for systemic changes at various levels and with various social identities in mind. Their advocacy may involve (but is not limited to): human rights, LGBTT* issues, anti-racism, anti-poverty, public health, non-violence, community-building and student engagement, or encouraging others on issues of social justice that impact the lives of students and the broader community.
Applications will be evaluated by the Selection Committee, based on the following criteria:
• Making a significant contribution to equity, inclusion and social justice through community engagement, either in specific positions of responsibility or while involved in organizing activities. (Requirements: Student statement and at least one reference letter)
• Engaging and inspiring other students or members of the community to advocate on social justice issues that impact the lives of students or the general community.
• Financial need may also be considered. Applicants may choose to complete the financial section of the application, and/or include information.
All full-time and part-time Red River College students are welcome to apply. The general application form must be accompanied by a student statement and required letter(s) of reference in order to be considered. The deadline for applications is March 1st. The Southern Chiefs’ Organization Every Child Matters Scholarship was created in honour of the children who attended residential schools and those who never made it home. Southern Chiefs’ Organization recognizes that all First Nation people, families, and communities have been impacted by the residential schools. The $2000 scholarship is intended to support Survivors and their descendants, as well as descendants of the families of the children who died. The scholarship is to be awarded on the basis of academic merit to a status citizen of one of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization member First Nations (Berens River, Birdtail Sioux, Black River, Bloodvein, Brokenhead, Buffalo, Canupawakpa, Dakota, Dauphin River, Ebb and Flow, Gambler, Hollow Water, Keeseekoowenin, Kinonjeoshtegon, Lake Manitoba, Lake St. Martin, Little Grand Rapids, Little Saskatchewan, Long Plain, O-Ch-Chak-Koo-Sipi, Pauingassi, Point Pegui, Pinaymootang, Plains Pine Creek, Poplar River, Rolling River, Roseau River, Sagkeeng, Sandy Bay, Skownan, Swan Lake, Tootinaowaziibeeng, or Waywayseecappo), who is a full- or part-time continuing student at the Red River College Polytechnic, who has successfully completed at least 12 credit hours, and who has made contributions to their school community or their community at large. Applicants must submit a letter describing their school or community involvement. The contact information of the chosen recipient shall be disclosed to the donor each year. Southern Chiefs' Organization Inc. observes an annual commemoration of all successful applicants. By submitting an application for the scholarship, the recipient of the Scholarship consents to be contacted through electronic mail or telephone for a brief interview with a member of Southern Chiefs’ Organization. In the unlikely event of a mitigating circumstance, such as a protection order or equivalent, anonymity will be granted to the recipient of the Scholarship. Application deadline is January 31st. Please note the name of the award to enter on the application form and have additional required documents ready to upload.
