The need for expertise in international business is growing in Canada. The International Business program prepares you to meet the challenges of adapting to the global marketplace.

Small classes are taught by a team of professionals who have real business experience. They offer innovative projects designed to apply international business theory through case study and discussion. You will be given opportunities to listen to guest speakers and to participate in relevant conferences, seminars, and other events.

Student teams will work with a local enterprise to prepare a marketing plan for entry into a new foreign market. Your plan will be evaluated by a panel of judges.

You will be required to complete a minimum six-week work experience component (assistance provided by RRC).  

Admission Requirements

If your academic history includes any of the following, please visit for important information: post-secondary studies at an institution other than Red River College; Modified (M), English as an Additional Language (E), or GED high school courses; or home schooling.

However, if you apply within 6 weeks of the program start date, admission requirements are due within 5 days of applying.

Regular Admission Requirements

  1. Diploma or Degree
    • Submit proof of graduation from or enrolment in the final year of a post-secondary:
      • Diploma (two-year or longer program)
      • Degree
    • If you provide proof of enrolment at time of application, your official final grades indicating successful completion must be submitted by July 15 for fall enrolment or by the deadline specified in your admission letter
    • Post-secondary transcripts must be submitted directly from the post-secondary institution
    • If you completed your education outside of Canada or the United States, do not submit your international academic credentials until requested to do so.  See English Language Requirements (ELRs) for more information.
  2. English Language Requirements (ELRs)
    • Have you successfully completed the equivalent of three years of full-time secondary (high school) education in Canada, the United States, or an ELR exempt country where English was the language of instruction? To view a list of ELR exempt countries click here.
      • If yes, you appear to meet English language requirements. Submit your transcripts for verification purposes. 
      • If no, you are required to submit proof of meeting an English language requirements option.  If you choose to complete an English language assessment, review this program's approved assessments and required levels.
      • If you completed all of your education in Canada, the United States, or an ELR exempt country in English but did not complete three years of high school, submit your transcripts for review.

Who Should Enrol?

This program requires that you have an above-average ability to learn, reason, and make decisions based on integrated knowledge. You will need highly developed communication skills coupled with a keen interest in current international events and sensitivity to cross-cultural relations.

Because International Business involves teamwork, you should have the ability to be flexible and enjoy the group process. As this program is academically demanding, time management skills are essential. Projects and assignments will require time outside of class hours.

Program Outline

More Information

The first half of this course in accounting covers double-entry bookkeeping procedures, period-end adjustments, and preparation of financial statements pertaining to sole proprietorships.  The second half of the course covers cost accounting concepts, including identification and behaviour of costs, financial statements of a manufacturer, cost-volume-profit analysis, job-order costing, and financial statement analysis.

You will learn interpersonal techniques such as active listening, providing feedback, and the proper use of voicemail. This course is designed to expose students to the basic concepts underlying the financial manager's approach to decision-making. The course focuses on building a basic understanding of accounting and finance fundamentals, such as financial statement creation and analysis, financial ratios, risk, leverage, capital budgeting, short and long-term financing, taxation and working capital management. The second part of the course will look at these fundamental concepts from an international perspective including, but not limited to, various international monetary bodies, the multinational corporation, financial considerations in conducting international business and banking, central banks and their impact on interest rates and currency fluctuation.

Students will learn to identify and validate an international (preferably) business opportunity. Students will be shown a pathway to execute on the idea opportunity in the modern economy using lean start-up methodologies.

The project involves preparation of a feasibility study to introduce, via import or export, a product or service to a foreign market.

Students working in groups are expected to display their knowledge by completing a comprehensive business plan for a profit seeking company.  This course requires students to integrate and apply what they have learned in other courses in the International Business program.

Each group will deliver a written business plan that includes both primary and secondary research, and analysis and findings pertinent to their business and industry. The business plan will also be presented to a panel jury.

Recent Changes

Applied Commerce and Management began the last delivery of this program through their department this fall (2017). All future intakes will be delivered through the School of Continuing Education with the first offering in January 2018.

The fall/2017 intake will be delivered over a 3-term period as follows:

In term 3 You must complete a minimum six-week work experience, either paid or unpaid. Wile the college will help students find job placements, it is each student's responsibility to find a position. the college approved placement must be related to the specialty courses of the program. Students will prepare an assignment related to the placement, and final evaluation will be assessed by the work placement supervisor and the college.

Beginning January 2018 all intakes will be delivered over a 1-term 10 month period. All students will be required to complete the 6 week practicum scheduled after the delivery of all theory based courses.
