Description
Diagnostic Medical Sonography, also known as Ultrasound, is a technology involving the application of high-frequency sound waves on patients to aid in medical diagnoses. As part of the patient care team, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers assess patients and provide information to physicians for diagnoses and monitoring patients' health statuses.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program prepares students, through theoretical and clinical training, to conduct Ultrasound examinations, focusing on areas such as obstetrics and gynecology, abdomen and superficial structures, and vascular sonographic studies. This content is cross-referenced to the national competency profile set up by Sonography Canada.
This is a specialized profession requiring a high degree of technical skills and hand eye coordination, and exceptional interpersonal skills.
As part of training, students will perform scans on each other therefore all students must be agreeable to participate in scanning procedures.
Sonography Canada administers the Canadian credentials. To be eligible for the Canadian credential, graduates must successfully complete both the Sonography Canada's Canadian Clinical Skills Assessment (CCSA) and the Sonography Canada written exam. All the costs for the Canadian credential are the responsibility of the graduate (approximately $925 CDN).

This is a competitive entry program. Offers of admittance will be made based on Casper results in descending order until all available seats are filled. Therefore, not all applicants who meet admission requirements will be offered a seat. Applicants who meet admission requirements but do not receive an offer of admittance may reapply for a future academic year by submitting a new application and application fee.

All Allied Health Sciences programs have Casper as part of their admissions process.
What is Casper?
Casper is a selection tool used by academic programs to help assess applicants for non-academic attributes or people skills. The Casper test is completed online.
Casper is a form of situational judgement test. Situational judgement tests are a type of psychological test which presents the test-taker with realistic, hypothetical scenarios and may ask the individual what they would do in the dilemma and why they would do it. Situational judgement tests tend to determine behavioral tendencies, assessing how an individual will behave in a certain situation, and knowledge instruction, which evaluates the effectiveness of possible responses. Once the Casper is completed, the applicant is rated in predetermined areas using a rubric and rating scale. In the end, the scores from all questions are totaled for an overall score for each applicant. Your scores are sent to Red River College Polytechnic by Casper. Applicants are then ranked accordingly and offered a seat in the program.
Casper Test: The Casper test is 90-110 minutes in length and is comprised of 2 sections containing typed and video responses. The final Casper test date for applicants for Fall 2025 admission is April 8, 2025.

This in-person, computer-based test is composed of four test modules: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The test takes 3 hours and 5 minutes to complete and is conducted in two parts. The first part assesses reading, listening, and writing, and the second part assesses speaking in a separate room.
Password Skills is hosted by the RRC Polytech Testing and Assessment Centre: E440, Manitou a bi Bii Daziigae building, on the fourth floor.
If you wish to do Password Skills remotely (not in-person), Password Skills Plus can be taken online. RRC Polytech does not offer Password Skills Plus, but we do accept the results for entry into program.

When working in the health care profession, there are many physical and emotional demands. As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you must:
- Be in good physical and mental health, and be able to stand or walk for extended periods of time without resting

- Have full use of both hands, wrists, arms and shoulders
- Have the ability to operate the scanner controls and the transducer simultaneously and effectively

- Demonstrate the use of safe and effective body mechanics while working with patients

Program Outline
- Program consists of seventeen (17) courses taken over three (3) academic terms.
- Beginning in Term 4 and ending in Term 6, students will complete three (3) Work- integrated learning - clinical placement courses.
- Full-time students will receive an advanced diploma in twenty-eight (28) months if all program requirements are met in consecutive terms.
- Program includes three (3) and six (6) credit hour course offerings delivered to full- time students over a 24-hour academic week in Term 1 and Term 2 and a 23-hour academic week in Terms 3.
- Program includes the “Communication Strategies” course to meet RRC Polytech’s communication learning goals.
- This program meets the standards of Sonography Canada and The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
- Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to write the national credentialing examinations for the CORE and Generalist Sonographer (abdominal/ superficial structures, vascular for generalist, obstetrics and gynecology) conducted by Sonography Canada; as well as the certification exams (Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI), abdomen and obstetrics & gynecology) by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS).

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program arranges clinical practicum placements for each student. Clinical practicum placements are located in a variety of accredited facilities throughout Manitoba. Students are responsible for travel, accommodation arrangements and costs to, during and from their clinical experience. Students continue with their didactic studies thru on-line learning while on their clinical placement and reliable internet access is required.
Note: For clinical site assignment, students work with the program for clinical practicum placements and scheduling, however; there is no guarantee that a student will receive a clinical assignment from their preferred sites.

Online learning is a critical component of course delivery in all Red River College Polytechnic programs. To ensure each student has the tools they need to achieve their academic goals, all Red River College Polytechnic students require, at minimum:
1. Off-campus access to a current computer with a webcam
2. A high speed internet connection
• Recommended minimum speed: 10 mbps for download, 3 mbps for upload
• Slower internet connection speeds may result in audio and video issues. Please keep in mind that if others in your home are using the same internet connection at the same time as you are, you may also experience audio and video issues.

Recent Changes
Red River College Polytechnic’s programs are routinely monitored for educational quality and improvements. Allied Health programs are also accredited by EQual™, Accreditation Canada and provincial regulatory bodies to ensure educational standard for health programs are achieved. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program has undergone recent changes to provide students with an enriched educational experience that exceeds required standards.

After successfully completing this program, you are eligible for certification with Sonography Canada and The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). If you are successful, you will be awarded a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Advanced diploma. This diploma indicates that you have the knowledge and skills of a professional and are eligible for membership with Sonography Canada and / or The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

Ultrasound is practiced in major urban and rural hospitals. In Manitoba, there is also a private clinic and a mobile ultrasound, where the sonographer travels with a portable ultrasound machine to service smaller rural communities. Some graduates are working in related teaching, management, and research positions. Others are employed as application specialists, technical advisors, or representatives for diagnostic imaging equipment and supply manufacturers.
Effective in 2017, an entry level technologist in Manitoba can expect to make approximately $35.72 per hour as a starting wage.
