TRAD-9032Energy Advisor Foundation Level Training
This course covers fundamental competencies such as low-rise housing construction and renovation, building envelope, heating, ventilation, air tightness testing, house energy computer modelling, and air conditioning, building science principles and the house-as-a-system concept. It will also prepare students for the NRCan exam.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate how to maintain courteous and professional relations with clients (e.g., dependability, timeliness, clear and polite communication).
- Explain the blower door technology for air tightness test.
- Explain the HOT2000 software for modelling a home.
- Explain the process how homes are built and renovated.
- Explain the factors that would make a home function efficiently.
- Describe safety considerations when accessing home construction or renovation sites (ladder safety, pilot lights, etc.)
- Describe building envelope barrier systems (air barrier, vapour barrier, moisture barrier, weather/wind barrier, thermal barrier, etc.) in homes.
- Describe windows, skylights, doors, and other transitions found in a building envelope.
- Use the Glossary of Housing Terms for communications with clients and air testing and modelling software.
- Explain the operations of mechanical heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
- Describe renewable energy systems and their properties.
- Identify the elements that make up a building and recognize their interdependence (house-as-a-system concept).
- Describe the diagnostic indicators (i.e. moisture, radon, carbon monoxide) of indoor air pollutants.
- Explain the physical processes for heat, air, and moisture flow that occur within a building.
- Explain the interdependence between heat, air and moisture in a home.
Format:
- 40 hours of instruction time (includes self-paced content and virtual meetings)
- One synchronous evening session per week

Student booklists will be available approximately 3 weeks prior to scheduled course start dates. Please ensure materials are purchased in advance, to be available for the start date.
