In this intermediate-level course, students will develop their listening comprehension and socio-cultural communication skills for success in settlement contexts and prepare for academic and employment goals. Participants will practice listening to identify key phrases and information, speakers’ attitudes, and to make inferences and distinguish fact from opinion, in both conversational and pre-recorded contexts. Students will practice conversation management and facilitate discussions, as well as deliver short presentations and share opinions. Students will apply these skills in formal and casual situations, building confidence incorporating a range of expressions. Learners will continue to enhance fluency and expand accuracy with grammatical structures and vocabulary.
In this upper intermediate course, multilingual learners will improve their listening and speaking fluency for academic and employment readiness. Students will identify main ideas, supporting details and specific information, and academic vocabulary in complex employment and discipline-related listening texts. They will practice listening to identify bias, contrasting ideas, and cause and effect relationships, as well as to make predictions and inferences in a variety of listening contexts. Students will also practice delivering presentations on academic or employment-related topics, demonstrating strong fluency and accuracy in vocabulary and grammar.
In this intermediate-level course, students will further develop their reading and writing skills for post-secondary studies, employment, and daily life. Participants will strengthen reading strategies, such as previewing, scanning, note-taking, and creating graphic organizers, to enhance comprehension of increasingly complex academic and employment-related reading passages. Students will continue to practice identifying main ideas, key phrases, facts, and opinions in these texts. Participants will focus on increasingly complex writing tasks, such as outlines, summaries, and connected paragraphs, improving accuracy in intermediate grammatical structures and vocabulary.
In this upper intermediate course, students will refine their reading and writing skills for academic and employment readiness. Learners will identify main ideas and supporting details in increasingly complex reading texts and apply reading strategies like previewing, annotating, and creating an outline. Additionally, learners will compose essays to express complex information on a range of topics and will enhance persuasive and personal writing skills and create summaries that incorporate paraphrasing strategies. Learners will continue to focus on improving both accuracy and fluency, through an expanding range of grammatical structures and vocabulary.
