Develop the foundational knowledge related to legal, ethical, professional and pharmacological principles and practices necessary for safe and effective RN prescribing practice. Principles of pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics will be reviewed. You will integrate these principles into the processes necessary for making and implementing prescribing decisions for individuals representing special populations. The course concludes with a review of the mandatory elements required in the preparation, transmission and documentation of prescriptions, including client teaching, follow up care and inter-professional communication and collaboration. You will draw on and apply knowledge of content and professional practice in completing critical thinking/clinical judgment case studies.
This course introduces the basic concepts and principles related to pharmacology (including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacotherapeutics) and the nurse’s role in the safe administration of drug therapies. The major classifications of drugs, encompassing best practice guidelines and medications commonly used in Canada will be reviewed. Content focuses on drug indications, contraindications, side effects, adverse effects and interactions. Safe drug administration procedures and patient teaching are emphasized through the nursing process framework. Issues arising from the use of drug therapy in contemporary society are also explored.
This course will provide you with foundational knowledge related to physical and psychosocial assessment of persons across the lifespan. This course will also examine cultural, social and gender factors that influence wellness and access to health care. The emphasis is on completion of a physical examination that includes a health history and comprehensive assessment techniques. The laboratory component provides the opportunity to practice these skills in order to explore normal and abnormal findings.
Apply the foundational knowledge obtained in the prerequisite course Essentials of RN Prescribing Practice (NURS-1100), as it relates to prescribing practices specific to STBBI and reproductive health. You will build on knowledge related to the pathogenesis of disease, concepts of immunology, safe assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of specific conditions. You will also be able to provide preventative practice measures and ongoing monitoring of clients. Further exploration of governing laws, regulations, and guidelines specific to STBBI and reproductive health, including the provision of care and the management of Combined Hormonal Contraception (CHC) and Progestin-only Hormonal Contraception (POC) will be discussed. Foundational and introductory knowledge are applied to the components of the nursing process and medical reasoning. You will draw on and apply knowledge of content and professional practice in completing critical thinking/clinical judgment case studies and tests.
