A core component of the Power Engineering Program, the Basic Communications Course stresses valuable fundamental skills to assist you in improving communication competency and confidence for employment attainment, change, and advancement.
Students will gain a general knowledge of the purpose, content and application of the boiler and pressure vessel codes and regulations, including the Power Engineers’ Regulations. They will also be introduced to CSA and ASME Codes for Power and Heating Boilers.Other topics include applied sciences such as thermodynamics, safety and WHMIS, welding and plumbing theory, pumps, piping and valves, boiler details, fittings and controls, fuels and combustion, boiler operation and maintenance, water treatment, heating systems and human comforts, refrigeration and air conditioning systems and accessories and controls, air compression and electricity.
This course provides simple First Aid and CPR techniques taught in an interactive environment for individuals who want an overview of First Aid and CPR for the home or workplace. This course covers the role, function and responsibilities of the first aider, skills needed to recognize and respond to emergencies, shock and treatment, major bleeds. obstructed airway and other breathing emergencies, cardiovascular emergencies, and CPR Level C. CPR Level C covers adult/child/baby CPR - one rescuer, adult/child/baby choking, barrier devices/pocket masks, AED, adult/child 2-rescuer CPR.
To be eligible to write the Fifth Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency exam, students must have completed 250 hours of documented relevant experience in a licensed plant.
This General Safety Training (GST) teaches basic general safety content to arm students with the core information necessary for them to protect themselves in workplaces on all descriptions. Although some examples may consider Manitoba legislation, this course has been developed by occupational safety and health professionals using generic information that is not provincially specific.
