Description
The Medical Laboratory Sciences program is your path to becoming a certified Medical Laboratory Technologist. As a Medical Laboratory Technologist you will be responsible for collecting, preparing, and analyzing blood, body fluids, and tissue samples, and interpreting results. This is a comprehensive program that requires dedication and commitment to develop proficient knowledge and skill in the five disciplines of laboratory work; Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Histology, Clinical Microbiology, and Transfusion Science. You will also be expected to gain proficiency at drawing blood samples from patients.

The first year is 10 months in length and is held at the Notre Dame Campus in Winnipeg. It begins with theory and practical foundations. You will learn how to obtain accurate and precise patient results with the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment.

The second year is a 11-month clinical practicum. It involves clinical training in diagnostic labs where you will be interacting with patients and health care workers to obtain the lab experiences necessary for success. If you apply to and are accepted into the Winnipeg location, you will attend classes and practicum in Winnipeg. If you are a Manitoba Prairie Mountain Health Region resident and apply to and are accepted into the Brandon location, you must attend year 1 classes in Winnipeg and most of the year 2 practicum in Brandon. You will be responsible for travel, relocation, and other costs.

This is an intensive and demanding program. You will be expected to attend classes and practicum for full-time hours, while putting time aside evenings and weekends for studying, assignments, and preparing presentations. Your progress will be evaluated by theory and practical examinations and competency-based objectives.

This program also helps prepare students to write the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences Certification (CSMLS) exam. Passing this exam is a requirement for all Canadian Medical Laboratory Technologists.

The Brandon location is open to all residents of Manitoba's Prairie Mountain Health Region residents only. You will attend the first 10 months of classes in Winnipeg at the Notre Dame Campus, after which you will attend most of the year 2 practicum in Brandon. If you apply to the Brandon location, you must attend classes in Winnipeg and practicum in Brandon, or you may not be able to complete the Medical Laboratory Sciences program. Applications and supporting documents received for the Brandon location indicating an address outside of the Prairie Mountain Health Region will be cancelled and the application fee will not be refunded.

The Winnipeg location is open to all residents of Manitoba. Classes and practicum will be held in Winnipeg.
