WELD-1017MIG & Arc Welding

This 40-hour welding course is designed for beginner and experienced welders looking to improve their skills. The course covers the theory and application of ARC and MIG processes, including shop orientation and safety. The practical component allows students to focus on the style of welding of their choice.  Students are required to complete a half-mask respirator fit test, complete a WHMIS course and are responsible for providing their Personal Protection Equipment. 

Note: This is not a certification welding course. If you are looking to become a certified welder, please refer to the RRC Polytech Full-time Welding program.

Other Information

Workers Compensation Board regulations stipulate that you must wear steel-toed footwear in industrial workplaces. You are required to provide and wear appropriate safety footwear in welding and machine shops, both in the College and during industry work placements.

All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) can be purchased at the RRC Polytech Campus Store; students must bring their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the first day of class:
  • CSA-approved footwear (preferably boots)
  • Welding glasses
  • Full face shield/visor with at least #10 lens for actual welding
  • Hearing protection
  • Leather gloves and aprons
  • Welding jacket, long-sleeved
  • 2 – pair of locking pliers (optional)
Note: All equipment must be in good working condition to prevent personal injuries. All Personal Protective Equipment must be worn in lab areas, with no exceptions. All items must be free from oils and grease.

Entrance Requirements

WHMIS Training Course on LEARN is to be completed before the start date of your course.

Half-face respirator fit testing is required before registering for the School of Continuing Education Welding course.  Please follow the directions below to schedule your fit test.

  1. Book your respirator fit test online. Students will need to know their student number and state which fit-test is required (Half-face, N95 or PAPR).
  2. Please use the online system to cancel/reschedule your appointment. You can do this through the original email confirmation.
  3. The fit-test room is located in C106.
  4. The purpose of the appointment is to ensure you are fitted for the correct size. Students requiring a half-face can bring their own 3M 7500 series respirator (or equivalent) on the day of the fit test or purchase a respirator from the fit tester at the time of the appointment. Do not purchase a new respirator prior to the appointment if you do not already own one.
  5. Students will pay for the following:
    • Respirator Fit Test: $46.00
    • 3M Half-Face Respirator: $50.88
      • Note: All respirators are subject to availability due to increased demand; therefore, pricing can vary based on brand and availability.
    • 3M P100 Filters: $12.10
    • Missed/Late Appointment Fee: $46.00
    • PAPR Fitting plus Rental: $87.00
  6. All payments will be made on-site prior to the fit-test. Payment options are preferably credit/debit cards or exact cash.
  7. Be on time for your appointment.  Appointments are scheduled in 20-minute intervals. Late arrival may result in a missed appointment charge of $46.
  8. If you are unable to attend your appointment, please cancel through your original confirmation email 24h prior to the appointment or call 204-632-2511.
  9. Do not eat, drink (other than water), smoke, vape or chew gum for 20 minutes before the test.
  10. Individuals are required to be clean-shaven where the respirator seals to the face.
    • Attending a fit-test appointment with facial hair that affects the seal of the respirator will result in a missed appointment charge of $46. You must have less than 24 hair growth.
    • If you are unable to be clean-shaven due to Medical or Religious beliefs, please fill out the appropriate form below and email safety@rrc.ca. 
We must receive this form at least one day PRIOR to your appointment and one week prior to when a PAPR is required for your program. SHS will supply further information about how to obtain a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) at your appointment. The cost to obtain an RRC Polytech PAPR is $87.

Welding students must forward a scanned copy to cde@rrc.ca to register for any School of Continuing Education welding courses.
