The Basic Cruising course is designed for the prospective cruising sailor who has minimal or no sailing knowledge or experience. The student is taught the necessary skills to safely sail local waters in moderate winds and sea conditions during daylight hours. The student will learn to perform the duties of both skipper and crew of a 25 - 29 foot sailing vessel. There is a significant number of new terms and marine law in this course. A pre-course study package is forwarded to the student three weeks prior to course commencement to decrease classroom time and enhance learning on the water. Upon successful completion, candidates are awarded the Canadian Yachting Association Basic Cruising certificate. Your CYA certified instructor is a veteran sailor with extensive and varied experience. You will be able to draw on your instructor's knowledge and experience to gain insight into cruising, boat selection, boat operation, chartering and provisioning.

Since the beginning of cinema, history has been represented and interpreted in a great variety of mass media and independent film productions. It is the explicit subject of archival primary sources as well as a variety of cinematic genres, including historical fiction, documentary and docudrama. But history is also implicitly present in many other film genres, including drama, satire, biography, animation, auteur films, propaganda, animation films and traditional heritage films. Whether or not a cinematic message is explicitly historical, film also needs to be critically analyzed and understood as the product of history, insofar as it represents the values, understandings, culture and technological expertise of a given time and place.

Learn to create and edit video with Windows Movie Maker. Take your pictures and make a movie out of them with motion and music. Learn to edit your movies by eliminating unwanted portions of your video, using transitions between scenes, adding titles at the beginning on the video, or at the end. Add music to the entire movie or just selected scenes. Once you’re done, learn how to publish the movie on different media. If you have Windows ME, Windows XP or Windows Vista, then you already have the program. Now, learn how to use it. You’ll be a movie making professional in no time!
This course starts at the basics, teaching students how to use their digital cameras. Camera settings, including the automatic and manual settings of the camera are covered . Students will learn how to use the automatic camera settings and also how to change the shutter, aperture and ISO settings manually. The course will help students build a solid foundation in the concepts of exposure control, control of motion, depth of field, lighting, lenses, filters. A camera manual is necessary and must be brought to each class.

Whether you are aware of it or not, your attitude is showing all of the time. Discuss the connection between attitude and behaviour and the role that attitude plays in the workplace.
Topics include how to calculate return on your investment, comparing different types of real estate, how to do subdivisions, and increasing value by changing the use. You will learn where to find a good deal and how to recognize if it’s a good buy. You will touch on accounting and managing your investment. An understanding of basic math is beneficial.

If you operate a motorized pleasure boat or watercraft, including a sailboat fitted with a motor, there is a legal requirement for proof of operator competency to be carried on board. Most commonly this proof of competency is in the form of a “Pleasure Craft Operator Card”.

Those working in the health-care field will be required to present proof of employment in the field, a certificate of graduation, confirmation of registration or a license with the regulatory body for that profession.
All students will be required to present proof of enrolment or registration in a Manitoba post-secondary education program.
Health professionals qualified to practice in jurisdictions outside Manitoba or Canada will be required to present proof of degree or registration or a license with the regulatory body from an outside jurisdiction (current or lapsed).

This is an $1000 award given annually to a student who demonstrates exceptional effort and/or the ability to lead, organize and engage students or members of the community in embodying the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism and social justice.
The successful recipient will be a community activist, advocate or leader who has worked for systemic changes at various levels and with various social identities in mind. Their advocacy may involve (but is not limited to): human rights, LGBTT* issues, anti-racism, anti-poverty, public health, non-violence, community-building and student engagement, or encouraging others on issues of social justice that impact the lives of students and the broader community.
Applications will be evaluated by the Selection Committee, based on the following criteria:
• Making a significant contribution to equity, inclusion and social justice through community engagement, either in specific positions of responsibility or while involved in organizing activities. (Requirements: Student statement and at least one reference letter)
• Engaging and inspiring other students or members of the community to advocate on social justice issues that impact the lives of students or the general community.
• Financial need may also be considered. Applicants may choose to complete the financial section of the application, and/or include information.
All full-time and part-time Red River College students are welcome to apply. The general application form must be accompanied by a student statement and required letter(s) of reference in order to be considered. The deadline for applications is March 1st.
