The goal of this course is to assist students in becoming a balanced self-determined individual who is mindful and respectful of others, one who can communicate effectively and be balanced in the four aspects of self: spirit, emotional, physical, and mental quadrants. This approach supports the holistic approach to education. Also, the behaviours related to historical intergenerational unresolved trauma will be covered including colonization, intergenerational effects of residential schools, land-based trauma, and lateral violence.

This course will enhance and strengthen foundational reading and writing skills to support student success in College programs. Study reading strategies to support comprehension and gain an understanding of techniques and processes to improve writing skills pertaining to academic, research papers and other documents using APA format. Emphasis will be placed on grammar, spelling, structure and the correct use of grammar.

This English course is designed for persons who are currently employed as welders and would like to increase their knowledge of the technical terms and language of the trade. This course will assist persons with technical language skills needed to complete the welding supervisor courses.
This course equips students with the skills to write effectively for business and technical purposes. You will progress from writing simple letters of request and complaint to reports and proposals, and finally to a comprehensive original research report.
This course focuses on writing for practical purposes: persuasive and expository writing, research skills, analysis of writing style, basics of technical writing, as well as the study of media and literature.
Review the four basic number operations. Emphasis is on developing proficiency in using whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, and ratios and proportions.
The purpose of this training is to enhance the opportunities of students for success in the trades mathematics. Students who plan to enter the trades courses in the fall and who are weak in mathematics should consider taking this training. Topics covered are: the manipulation of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percent, ratio and proportion, signed numbers, geometry (including calculation of volume), algebra (solving equations in one unknown), and problem solving.

You will review the four mathematical operations in concepts such as whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, with and without using a calculator. You will learn to apply principles of conversions, using metric and English (U.S. standard) measurements, principles of percent, ratio and proportion, and principles of right-angle triangles. You will also learn how to manipulate equations and formulae to solve shop-related problems as well as problems in basic geometry. You will be introduced to calculations involving perimeter, area and volume.
Develop and improve your reading skills and comprehension as well as expand vocabulary through a series of exercises .
These classes will you prepare for the General Education Development (GED) tests. Topics include mathematics, writing, reading and comprehension skills, literature, science, and social studies. Applicants must be at least 19 years of age to write the official tests.
In this course you will learn how to improve your score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). You will become familiar with the structure of the test, learn test-taking strategies specific to the IELTS and practice with an instructor. The course will review all four components: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Special emphasis will be given to the grammar structures, vocabulary items and sentence patterns important to the IELTS. You will also get the opportunity to have an instructor give individualized feedback on student performance for the tested skills.

This is an $1000 award given annually to a student who demonstrates exceptional effort and/or the ability to lead, organize and engage students or members of the community in embodying the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism and social justice.
The successful recipient will be a community activist, advocate or leader who has worked for systemic changes at various levels and with various social identities in mind. Their advocacy may involve (but is not limited to): human rights, LGBTT* issues, anti-racism, anti-poverty, public health, non-violence, community-building and student engagement, or encouraging others on issues of social justice that impact the lives of students and the broader community.
Applications will be evaluated by the Selection Committee, based on the following criteria:
• Making a significant contribution to equity, inclusion and social justice through community engagement, either in specific positions of responsibility or while involved in organizing activities. (Requirements: Student statement and at least one reference letter)
• Engaging and inspiring other students or members of the community to advocate on social justice issues that impact the lives of students or the general community.
• Financial need may also be considered. Applicants may choose to complete the financial section of the application, and/or include information.
All full-time and part-time Red River College students are welcome to apply. The general application form must be accompanied by a student statement and required letter(s) of reference in order to be considered. The deadline for applications is March 1st. The Southern Chiefs’ Organization Every Child Matters Scholarship was created in honour of the children who attended residential schools and those who never made it home. Southern Chiefs’ Organization recognizes that all First Nation people, families, and communities have been impacted by the residential schools. The $1500 scholarship is intended to support Survivors and their descendants, as well as descendants of the families of the children who died. The scholarship is to be awarded on the basis of academic merit to a status citizen of one of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization member First Nations (Berens River, Birdtail Sioux, Black River, Bloodvein, Brokenhead, Buffalo, Canupawakpa, Dakota, Dakota Tipi, Dauphin River, Ebb and Flow, Gambler, Hollow Water, Keeseekoowenin, Kinonjeoshtegon, Lake Manitoba, Lake St. Martin, Little Grand Rapids, Little Saskatchewan, Long Plain, O-Ch-Chak-Koo-Sipi, Pauingassi, Point Pegui, Pinaymootang, Plains Pine Creek, Poplar River, Rolling River, Roseau River, Sagkeeng, Sandy Bay, Skownan, Swan Lake, Tootinaowaziibeeng, or Waywayseecappo), who is a full- or part-time continuing student at the Red River College Polytechnic, who has successfully completed at least 12 credit hours, and who has made contributions to their school community or their community at large.
