WELD-1017MIG & Arc Welding

This 40-hour welding course is designed for beginner and experienced welders looking to improve their skills. The course covers the theory and application of ARC and MIG processes, including shop orientation and safety. The practical component allows students to focus on the style of welding of their choice.  Students are required to complete a half-mask respirator fit test, complete a WHMIS course and are responsible for providing their Personal Protection Equipment. 

Note: This is not a certification welding course. If you are looking to become a certified welder, please refer to the RRC Polytech Full-time Welding program.

Entrance Requirements

Before the start of your course, students must:

1. Complete a half-face Respirator Fit Test:

a. Fit testing is required prior to registering for the School of Continuing Education Welding course.

b. Please contact safety@rrc.ca to schedule your fit test and obtain a respirator.

c. Do not purchase a new respirator prior to your appointment. If you already have a respirator, please bring it with you to your appointment. 

2. Have the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

a. All PPE can be purchased at the RRC Polytech Campus Store.

b. Students are required to bring their PPE on the first day of class, which includes:

i. Certified CSA-approved footwear (preferably boots)

ii. Eye protection (glasses)

iii. Hearing protection

iv. Welding gloves (leather gloves)

v. Welding jacket (long-sleeved)

vi. Welding apron (optional)

vii. Full face shield/visor with at least a #10 lens for actual welding (an auto-shade style helmet is also acceptable)

viii. Two pairs of locking pliers (optional)

ix. For personal safety, a welding respirator is recommended and will be discussed at the start of the program.

c. All equipment must be in good working condition to prevent personal injuries.

d. All PPE must be worn in lab areas, with no exceptions.

e. All items must be free from oils and grease.

3. Complete WHMIS training on LEARN:

a. WHMIS training must be completed before the start date of your course.

Textbooks and Booklists

Students enrolling in Part-Time and Online Education courses may be required to purchase textbooks and materials at participating Campus Store locations or online at bookstore.rrc.ca. Student booklists will be available approximately 3 weeks prior to scheduled course start dates. Please ensure materials are purchased in advance, to be available for the start date.

Note: Courses requiring a textbook will show "TR" in the Delivery field.
