Description

Prepare for a career in the fast-paced, ever-evolving, and highly in demand warehousing sector of the supply chain industry. Upon completing this program you will gain the essential skills, knowledge, and experience needed to pursue a career in the field.

In this program you will learn how to: manage inventory; utilize distribution systems and processes; interpret and complete a variety of industry specific documentation; and use a variety of tools, equipment, and technology specific to the field. In addition, you will also learn health and safety procedures in warehousing environment, security practices that are integral to the distribution environment, and the personal and professional competencies for career success and advancement.

Admission Requirements

Regular Admission Requirements

Successful completion of Grade 12.

Please note that Criminal Records Check(s) may be required for some practicum sites. If you are unable to meet this requirement, it may limit your practicum opportunities. Should this be the case, a practicum site will still be provided where this is not a requirement.

Mature Student Admission Requirements
If you are 19 years of age or older and have been out of high school for a minimum of one year at time of application, and you do not meet the regular admission requirements, you may apply under the Mature Student admission requirements.

As a part of these special admission requirements, you will also have to complete testing in certain skill areas to ensure you are prepared to enter the program. For further information, please inquire.

English as an Additional Language Requirements

If you are applying to this program with English as a second language you will have to undergo English Language Proficiency testing.

Program Outline

You must successfully complete all seven courses and the practicum to graduate from this program. If you are new to the field, it is recommended you take Introduction to Supply Chain Management in your first term.

More Information

This course will guide students through the techniques and processes involved in writing, speaking, and listening effectively for business. Students will be taught skills for networking, meetings, and working in teams. Students will apply a direct approach to create professional emails and letters. Students will learn strategies for competent information report writing. Students will be taught how to create and deliver a memorable oral presentation. The proper use of business writing rules, grammar, and etiquette will be emphasized throughout the course.

DIST-1010Introduction to Supply Chain Management
More Information

In this course, you will gain learn about all aspects of the supply chain including the variety of roles within the supply chain, the modes of transport and the equipment types associated with those modes, and service requirements that have to be considered when working within the supply chain. In addition, you will learn the industry specific-terminology, discuss a variety of policies and procedures, and learn to interpret a variety of documents including, but not limited to, bills of lading.

More Information

Material handling includes all activities dealing with the movement of product within a facility. In this course, you will learn the various tools, equipment and devices used in material handling within the supply chain. You also describe and explain how to unload a variety of transport equipment, use a variety of material handling aids, and describe the processes for securing loads for a variety of transportation modes meeting all necessary requirements.

More Information

Documentation and record keeping are integral to the movement of goods within the supply chain. In this course, you will learn to interpret and prepare a variety of warehousing documents including bills of lading, customs documents, purchase orders, work tickets, and maintenance documents. You will learn a variety of computer applications specific to the industry. You will learn the records associated with quality assurance and the importance of client confidentiality within the industry.

More Information

A warehousing and distribution specialist has responsibility for a variety of inventory control functions within the supply chain. You will learn the processes and procedures related to inventory control, loss prevention, reverse logistics, and global security protocols. You will explain the procedures for securing products, the facility and vehicles.

DIST-1014Shipping and Receiving
More Information

In this course, students will explore the role of the shipping and receiving department within the supply chain. Starting with safety, they will learn warehouse operations and the policies and procedures related to the shipment and delivery of products. They will practice planning shipments for delivery and learn the importance of communication and organization to help ensure the smooth movement of goods. Students will identify sustainable practices in logistics and make recommendations for improving the efficiency of shipping and receiving processes. Finally, students will discuss useful strategies for de-escalating stressful situations and resolving conflicts in the warehouse.

More Information

A safe and secure work environment ensures the safety and security of people and products. You will learn to maintain data security, follow warehouse security plans and respond to emergency protocols while adhering to government regulations and workplace health, environment and safety protocols. You will also learn about the environmental initiatives and trends within the supply chain.

This practicum will provide you with the opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and judgment learned in the theory-based courses of the program.

Prerequisites:

Students enrolling in Part-Time and Online Education courses may be required to purchase textbooks and materials at participating Campus Store locations or online at bookstore.rrc.ca. Student booklists will be available approximately 3 weeks prior to scheduled course start dates. Please ensure materials are purchased in advance, to be available for the start date.

CO-OP/Practicum Information

This practicum will provide you with the opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills, and judgment learned in the theory-based courses of the program. The practicum is 200 hours in length, and is the capstone for the program. The practicum is assessed on a pass/fail basis.

Practicum Prerequisites

To attend the practicum you must:

  1. Successfully completed all courses
  2. Submit your Red River College photo ID card
  3. Have all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) prior to attending the practicum. Such equipment includes: safety shoes (CSA approved), safety glasses (CSA approved), hard hat (CSA approved), and hearing protection (ear plugs or headphones).
  4. Submit Adult Criminal Record Vulnerable Sector Check (ACRVS) and Provincial Child Abuse Registry (PCAR) check and Adult Abuse Registry (AAR) check documents if the site requires it.

Costs

Students are required to provide their own PPE in order to attend practicum sites. Such equipment includes: safety shoes (CSA approved), safety glasses (CSA approved), hard hat (CSA approved), and hearing protection (ear plugs or headphones).

Computer/Laptop Requirements

Online learning is a critical component of course delivery in all Red River College programs. To ensure each student has the tools they need to achieve their academic goals, all Red River College students require, at a minimum:

1.  Off-campus access to a current computer with a webcam

2.  A high-speed internet connection

• Recommended minimum speed: 10 mbps for download, 3 mbps for upload
• Slower internet connection speeds may result in audio and video issues. Please keep in mind that if others in your home are using the same internet connection at the same time as you are, you may also experience audio and video issues.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing the program, you will have the critical skills needed to function competently, professionally, and ethically as a warehousing and distribution specialist.

Specifically, you should be able to:

1. Demonstrate effective verbal, non-verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills appropriate to the workplace.
2. Use a variety of technologies and software to communicate, record and file information, and create documents.
3. Utilize transportation equipment appropriate to mode of transport.
4. Use a variety of tools, equipment and devices to pack, measure, move and store inventory.
5. Handle materials by inspecting, loading, unloading, filling and securing orders.
6. Comply with workplace safety, privacy, and health regulations by adhering to government legislation and industry regulations.
7. Follow security protocols by preparing plans, installing and maintaining devices and performing loss prevention activities.
8. Demonstrate professionalism by valuing diversity, respecting workplace culture, and committing to lifelong learning.
9. Demonstrate personal integrity, reliability, ethics, accountability, and resourcefulness in all roles and responsibilities.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process which documents and compares an individual's prior learning gained from prior education, work and life experiences and personal study to the learning outcomes in College courses/programs. For more information, please visit www.rrc.ca/rpl.

Graduation Requirements

You must complete your part-time program within four years from the start of the first course in the program, unless otherwise stated in the program outline. The practicum is evaluated on a pass/fail basis.

A program GPA of 2.0 (60%) is required to graduate.

You will not be granted more than 75% of your credit requirements for graduation through transfer of credit.

Graduation with Honours
If you obtain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 or better for the program you will graduate with honours. If you fail any course in the program, you will not be eligible for this honours designation.

Employment Potential

Graduates will be prepared for employment in a variety of roles warehousing and distribution settings, including but not limited to: warehouse supervisor, warehouse assistant, Warehouse Materials Handler, warehouse shipper/receiver, warehouse picker/loader, and general warehouse labourer.
