Gain the theory, principles and skills required for a successful career in fire alarm systems installation and maintenance. You will study a range of topics including electronics, business communication and fire alarm systems.
This program, in conjunction with on-the-job training and one to two years of experience, can lead to certification by the Canadian Fire Alarm Association.

This course will guide students through the techniques and processes involved in writing, speaking, and listening effectively for business. Students will be taught skills for networking, meetings, and working in teams. Students will apply a direct approach to create professional emails and letters. Students will learn strategies for competent information report writing. Students will be taught how to create and deliver a memorable oral presentation. The proper use of business writing rules, grammar, and etiquette will be emphasized throughout the course.
Develop the basic principles of business writing and discuss topics such as: standard business formats, the ability to write clear, readable letters and memos. It also reviews correct grammar and usage and how to improve effectiveness as a speaker.
This DC and AC Fundamentals course is designed to equip students with an introductory understanding of electron theory, conductors, insulators, voltage, current, resistance, power, series and parallel circuits, batteries, capacitance, inductance, reactance, motors, generators, transformers, three-phase power and power factor correction. Students will learn and then apply theory to perform basic circuit analysis.
Participate in a review of Ohm's Law and a study of diodes, power supplies, principles of sound, solid state theory and special semi-conductor devices. Learn about integrated circuits, transistor amplifier equivalent circuits, regulated power supplies, schematic interpretation and repair procedures.
Examine the fire alarm industry and its various associations. Discuss historical-industry organizations, codes and standards of different fire alarm systems, fire protection in building design, water extinguishing, the nature of fire and the extinguishing process - testing and verification.
Develop a full comprehension of the application of fire systems, having regard for codes, operation and requirements. Increase your ability to verify, check, test and maintain fire alarm systems. Learn about modes of operation, zoning and supervision for different circuits, control equipment for fire detection and alarm signalling, voice communication and smoke control, electrical installment requirements and layout of fire alarm systems.
Students enrolling in Part-Time and Online Education courses may be required to purchase textbooks and materials at participating Campus Store locations or online at bookstore.rrc.ca. Student booklists will be available approximately 3 weeks prior to scheduled course start dates. Please ensure materials are purchased in advance, to be available for the start date.

Online learning is a critical component of course delivery in all Red River College programs. To ensure each student has the tools they need to achieve their academic goals, all Red River College students require, at a minimum:

Training Exemptions Proof of Course Completion and Required Documentation
A student may be granted a training exemption by the CFAA in one or more of courses 2, 3 and 4. Training exemptions are based solely upon courses that have been previously completed at the college, university or trade school level.
To apply for a training exemption with the CFAA, a minimum grade of 60% must be achieved for an exemption. Work experience and high school courses are not grounds for an exemption.
The required documentation for an exemption is to complete a CFAA Exemption Form, a photocopy of your official college transcript, photocopies of your course outlines.
