Overview

The college is conducting a review of the Residential Decorating program.  Effective May 1, 2023, due to limited demand, the part-time Residential Decorating program will not be offering courses.  Please refer to Residential Decorating: RRC Polytech Program Explorer for more information about the full-time program.  For those students currently in the part-time program that would like to continue, please reach out to cde@rrc.ca for more information.

Description

Acquire the skills to successfully manage decorating projects. You will learn to apply design principles to enhance the function and quality of both interior and exterior living environments. You will gain the skills to analyze your clients' decorating needs and develop furniture floor plans, recommend product purchases, and facilitate installation arrangements.

  1. Successful completion of Grade 12.

Mature Student Admission Requirements
If you are 19 years of age or older and have been out of high school for a minimum of one year at time of application, and you do not meet the regular admission requirements, you may apply under the Mature Student admission requirements.

Students will be taught skills for networking, meetings, and working in teams. Students will apply a direct approach to create professional emails and letters. Students will learn strategies for competent information report writing. Students will be taught how to create and deliver a memorable oral presentation. The proper use of business writing rules, grammar, and etiquette will be emphasized throughout the course.

Topics covered in Level 2A will include: colour psychology, fabric selection, furniture history and style, home exteriors, basement floor plans and elevations, and basement colour and furniture collages. Tours of suppliers and galleries may be included.

Employ your decorating skills gained in earlier courses (Level 1 & 2), as you design your final project in Level 3. Learn to present specifications and cost estimates to clients, develop a resume and portfolio applicable to the industry, and apply related building codes.

Topics include: drafting basic space plans; construction and interior clearance codes; project management and communications, working with clients, vendors, contractors, and tradespeople; paperwork requirements for projects; writing up of specs for cost estimates. Tours of homes and décor suppliers, and guest speakers may be included.

Put your decorating skills gained in Level 1 & 2 courses to use as you design your final project in Level 3. Learn to present specifications and cost estimates to clients, develop a resume and portfolio applicable to the industry, and apply related building codes. 

Topics covered include: career information and promotion, and a final project based on the cumulative skills gained in Levels 1 to 3. Throughout most of this course, you will develop a final program residential decorating project which will be presented to the class and other professionals.

The Residential Decorating Practicum will place you in a one-on-one learning relationship in the workplace with an experienced Residential Decorator.

The 150 hour practicum experience will help students establish direct ties to the Residential Decorating and Design profession.


Students enrolling in Part-Time and Online Education courses may be required to purchase textbooks and materials at participating Campus Store locations or online at bookstore.rrc.ca. Student booklists will be available approximately 3 weeks prior to scheduled course start dates. Please ensure materials are purchased in advance, to be available for the start date.

CO-OP/Practicum Information

Students must complete all theory courses in the program before being eligible for a practicum placement. Placements are arranged through Red River College Polytechnic.

Computer/Laptop Requirements

Online learning is a critical component of course delivery in all Red River College Polytechnic programs. To ensure each student has the tools they need to achieve their academic goals, all Red River College Polytechnic students require, at minimum:

1.  Off-campus access to a current computer with a webcam

2.  A high speed internet connection

• Recommended minimum speed: 10 mbps for download, 3 mbps for upload
• Slower internet connection speeds may result in audio and video issues. Please keep in mind that if others in your home are using the same internet connection at the same time as you are, you may also experience audio and video issues.

  • Apply decorating elements by selecting appropriate furniture, floor coverings, window coverings and wall coverings
  • Promote and sell decorating services to potential clients
  • Communicate with clients, suppliers and contractors  
  • Manage decorating projects to completion and client satisfaction
  • Adapt to innovation and change
  • Demonstrate professionalism by meeting the decorating industry standards of conduct

Graduation Requirements

You must complete your part-time program within four years from the start of the first course in the program, unless otherwise stated in the program outline.

A program GPA of 2.0 (60%) is required to graduate.

You will not be granted more than 75% of your credit requirements for graduation through transfer of credit.

Graduation with Honours
If you obtain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 or better for the program, you will graduate with honours. If you fail any course in the program, you will not be eligible for this honours designation.

Employment Potential

Graduates may begin working as entry-level sales consultants in home improvement retail stores or as decorating consultants with retailers and distributors of products such as:

  • Paint and wall coverings
  • Flooring
  • Fabric
  • Window coverings
  • Cabinetry
  • Furnishings
  • Lighting fixtures
  • Kitchen and bathroom fixtures 

With additional business skills, you may be able to build a consulting business with homeowners and/or homebuilders, or work with other companies that specialize in residential decorating services.
