Description
The part-time Power Engineering course offerings at RRC Polytech allow alternative pathways to certification with the Government of Manitoba’s Inspection and Technical Services (ITS).
You will follow the Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee (SOPEEC) approved curriculum and discover what is required of 5th and 4th Class Power Engineers in preparation for writing the certification exams with the ITS.
These preparatory courses will allow you to develop the knowledge and skills expected for completing the certification exams and during your steam time without completing the full-time power engineering program.
Completion of these courses will support your journey to becoming a certified Power Engineer.

This course is designed to prepare 5th Class Power Engineers for the Interprovincial 4th Class Power Engineering Certification Exam – Part A. Students will follow the Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee (SOPEEC)- approved curriculum, with a focus on the acts, regulations, and codes as they pertain to the role of a Power Engineer. They will study mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics and chemistry to develop a basic understanding of the physics involved in refrigeration, steam production and the operation of auxiliary support systems. Through exploration of basic electricity, instrumentation, controls, and boiler construction, students will become familiar with the safe and efficient operation of steam plants.
This course is designed for 5th Class Power Engineers interested in challenging the Interprovincial 4th Class Power Engineering Certification Exam – Part A with the Government of Manitoba’s Inspection and Technical Services (ITS).
Successful completion of this course will earn students partial credit toward their practical experience requirement. Students interested in earning their full practical experience credit can explore RRC Polytech’s full-time day Power Engineering Technology (4th Class) program.
This course is designed to prepare 5th Class Power Engineers for the Interprovincial 4th Class Power Engineering Certification Exam – Part B. Students will follow the Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee (SOPEEC) approved curriculum with a focus on the principles of refrigeration and their application within food production and preservation. Students will study the fundamentals of gas and steam turbines, gasoline and diesel engines, common types of pumps, and various methods employed for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). By the end of the course, students will have a basic understanding of the methods and techniques used to condition air for human comfort and health. This course is designed for 5th Class Power Engineers interested in challenging the Interprovincial 4th Class Power Engineering Certification Exam – Part B with the Government of Manitoba’s Inspection and Technical Services (ITS).Successful completion of this course will earn students partial credit toward their practical experience requirement. Students interested in earning their full practical experience credit can explore RRC Polytech’s full-time day Power Engineering Technology (4th Class) program.
Students enrolling in Part-Time and Online Education courses may be required to purchase textbooks and materials at participating Campus Store locations or online at bookstore.rrc.ca. Student booklists will be available approximately 3 weeks prior to scheduled course start dates. Please ensure materials are purchased in advance, to be available for the start date.

Online learning is a critical component of course delivery in all Red River College programs. To ensure each student has the tools they need to achieve their academic goals, all Red River College students require, at a minimum:
1. Off-campus access to a current computer with a webcam
2. A high-speed internet connection
• Recommended minimum speed: 10 mbps for download, 3 mbps for upload
• Slower internet connection speeds may result in audio and video issues. Please keep in mind that if others in your home are using the same internet connection at the same time as you are, you may also experience audio and video issues.
• Please refer to https://www.rrc.ca/future-students/computer-requirements/ for further information on Computer Requirements for Students.
Please note that any anticipated costs are not included in Books and Supplies estimates.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process which documents and compares an individual's prior learning gained from prior education, work and life experiences and personal study to the learning outcomes in College courses/programs. For more information, please visit www.rrc.ca/rpl.
Opportunities will exist in environments such as industrial plants, school divisions, and corporate and private buildings.
