Regular Admission Requirements
The program consists of ten courses (360 hours of instruction). Students typically take this program on a part-time basis over three to four years. A Certificate in Health Services Leadership and Management is awarded upon successful completion of the program.

In this course you will explore the history of the Canadian health care delivery system, its funding model, the principles of Medicare, and applicable legislation. You will examine the determinants of health, drivers of change, and the roles and responsibilities of the various professions and service delivery systems.
This course provides an overview of the role of human resource management in achieving organizational strategic objectives. You will explore integrated, goal orientated, human resource management functions in the context of multiple factors (competitive, social, legal and organizational).
In this course, you will examine and apply concepts of organizational behavior and learn how they impact on organizational effectiveness. You will explore how to strengthen employee motivation, group dynamics, leadership and team building. Change management in complex health care environments will be discussed.
In this course, you will be introduced to the major concepts involved in health services finance. You will explore the structure of health care funding, the principles of budgeting, monitoring, variance analysis and financial benchmarking. The realities of resource allocation in the age of “doing more with less” will be discussed.
In this course, you will study the application of conceptual models in supporting customer service excellence. You will explore the roles of personal and professional standards for honesty, values and ethics in health services. Strategies for investigating and defining problems will be examined from a variety of stakeholder perspectives.
This course will explore current issues and trends affecting the future direction, sustainability, and enhancement of the health service delivery system.
In this course, you will acquire the skills to develop strategy and manage people systems and processes within health care organizations. You will examine the role of managers in ethics, organizational change, safety and risk management.
In this course, you will explore leadership concepts and their application to health services delivery. The LEADS Health Leadership Capabilities Framework and the Canadian College of Health Leader’s Leadership Competencies will be examined. You will discuss practices of exemplary leadership drawn from your readings.
In this course, you will examine models for effective managerial decision-making. The implications of culture, change, ethics and legislation on decision-making will be discussed. Barriers to individual and group growth and dynamics will be explored. You will apply your learning in developing innovative strategies to solve problems to improve efficiency, performance and quality of care in health services.
This course addresses the theory and application of quality performance within health care services. You will explore how performance and total quality management are embedded into business management and operational planning. Emphasis is placed on establishing and maintaining organizational quality improvement strategies.
Students enrolling in Part-Time and Online Education courses may be required to purchase textbooks and materials at participating Campus Store locations or online at bookstore.rrc.ca. Student booklists will be available approximately 3 weeks prior to scheduled course start dates. Please ensure materials are purchased in advance, to be available for the start date.

Online learning is a critical component of course delivery in all Red River College programs. To ensure each student has the tools they need to achieve their academic goals, all Red River College students require, at minimum:
1. Off-campus access to a current computer with a webcam
2. A high speed internet connection
• Recommended minimum speed: 10 mbps for download, 3 mbps for upload
• Slower internet connection speeds may result in audio and video issues. Please keep in mind that if others in your home are using the same internet connection at the same time as you are, you may also experience audio and video issues.

You must complete your part-time program within four years from the start of the first course in the program, unless otherwise stated in the program outline.
A program GPA of 2.0 (60%) is required to graduate.
You will not be granted more than 75% of your credit requirements for graduation through transfer of credit.

Graduation with Honours
If you obtain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 or better for the program, you will graduate with honours. If you fail any course in the program, you will not be eligible for this honours designation.
