Description
Learn how to design, build and maintain small- to medium-sized networks. You will receive the theoretical foundation from industry qualified instructors, then learn to apply your knowledge and skills using Cisco® technologies.

This accredited program will prepare you for the Certified Cisco® Network Associate (CCNA) examination.

The curriculum is that of the Cisco Networking Academy. The Academy partners with schools and organization worldwide to develop and deliver innovative Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) courses. The curriculum is developed by industry leaders in information technology and provides hands-on opportunities to practice real-world skills, and is benchmarked to industry certification standards.

This program is offered on a part-time basis and as such, you can expect to spend approximately 6 - 10 hours per week outside of class studying.

Admission Requirements

Proficiency in basic computer skills  is essential to your success in this program. If you do not have these skills, it is strongly recommended that you complete Computers - Intro (COMP-1081) prior to beginning the program.

Regular Admission Requirements
To apply under the regular admission requirements, you must have your Grade 12.

Special Admission Requirements
If you are 19 years of age or older on or before September 30 in your year of registration, have been out of high school for a minimum of one year, and you do not meet the regular admission requirements, you may apply under the special admission requirements.

Who Should Enrol?

This program is designed for network administrators and technicians who need to configure and support multi protocol networks, and software engineers who are using Cisco® IOS software.

You must have a basic knowledge of computer hardware and networks before entering the program.

More Information

This course introduces the architecture, structure, protocols, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. It uses the OSI and TCP layered models to examine the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, transport, network, data link, and physical layers.

You will design and apply an IPv4 and/or IPv6 addressing scheme on simple LAN topologies. Topologies are built using Cisco routers and switches available in class. To  supplement the your learning, Packet Tracer (PT) activities help you analyze protocol and network operation and build small networks in a simulated environment.

More Information

This course investigates the architecture, components and operation of routers and switches in a small to medium business environment. You will analyze, configure, verify and troubleshoot networks that employ both IPv4 / IPv6 protocols, static routing,  ACLs, DHCP, Inter-VLAN routing, static routing, switch operation, spanning-tree protocol, redundancy protocols, mitigation of LAN attacks and wireless networks. Course material is presented in class through lectures and then put into practice through practical labs and problem solving sessions.

This course conforms to the third of four courses leading to the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) designation. The course expands on topics covered in Cisco Networking Level 2 and examines new topics. It describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a large and complex network. You will learn how to configure routers and switches for advanced functionality. By the end of this course, you should be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with OSPF, EIGRP, STP, and VTP. You will also develop the knowledge and skills needed to implement DHCP and DNS operations in a network.

This course conforms to the fourth of four courses leading to the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) designation. It discusses the WAN technologies and network services required by converged applications in a complex network. The course enables you to understand the selection criteria of network devices and WAN technologies to meet network requirements. You will learn how to configure and troubleshoot network devices and resolve common issues with data link protocols. You will also develop the knowledge and skills needed to implement IPSec and virtual private network (VPN) operations in a complex network.

Computer/Laptop Requirements

Online learning is a critical component of course delivery in all Red River College programs. To ensure each student has the tools they need to achieve their academic goals, all Red River College students require, at minimum:

1.  Off-campus access to a current computer with a webcam

2.  A high speed internet connection

Red River College is proud to be the Regional Networking Academy for Manitoba and to participate in the Cisco® Networking Academy Program. 

We have the largest Cisco® Networking Academy in the province.

Students should expect to spend 6 - 10 hours per week outside of class to study and practice.

Graduation Requirements

You must complete your part-time program within four years from the start of the first course in the program, unless otherwise stated in the program outline.

A program GPA of 2.0 (60%) is required to graduate.

You will not be granted more than 75% of your credit requirements for graduation through transfer of credit.

Graduation with Honours
If you obtain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 or better for the program, you will graduate with honours. If you fail any course in the program, you will not be eligible for this honours designation.
