CO-OP/Practicum Information

MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES CLINICAL TRAINING INFORMATION
The Medical Laboratory Sciences program has three main clinical practicum facilities located within Manitoba.  Practicum placements in Winnipeg (St. Boniface General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre) are limited and students may/will be required to relocate outside of Winnipeg to Westman Lab, Brandon Regional Health Centre, for practicum.

Students will be informed of the allocation of their practicum placement at a later date by the program. There is no guarantee students will be placed at their desired practicum location.

Special considerations of personal circumstances will not be given in regard to assigning practicum placements.

Students will be responsible for costs associated with practicum such as admission requirements, relocation, and travel.

HOW IS IT DECIDED WHERE STUDENTS GO FOR CLINICAL TRAINING?
Students will be surveyed for their preferred training location at the beginning of Term 2 to determine tentative placements. Students will be advised of tentative placements approximately 6 months in advance. Placements will be finalized closer to the end of Term 3.

We attempt to give everyone their first choice in training.  However, if students need to be placed at a facility that is not their first choice, the program looks at application date and determine placements based on when students applied to the program.

WHAT IF I CAN’T GO OUTSIDE OF WINNIPEG?
Special considerations of personal circumstances will not be given in regard to assigning practicum placements.

Students who do not accept practicum placement when it is offered may defer their training for one year.  At that time, the placement procedure will still be in effect so there is no guarantee that a Winnipeg placement will be available.

ROTATIONS THROUGH COMMUNITY HOSPITALS

Students will be required to spend approximately 4 to 7 weeks for clinical rotations at community hospitals or rural hospitals that are within a 2-hour drive from Winnipeg.  These rotations may occur at different sites and can be 1 to 4 weeks in length each (4 to 7 weeks total).
