NRSG-3010Substance Use Disorders and Nursing Care
Substance use disorder is recognized as a chronic illness, yet it continues to be viewed as a moral issue from both a societal and health care perspective in Canada. This course is designed to explore this misconception with evidence informed knowledge based on a theoretical understanding of addiction theory, change theory, substance use disorder, and the impact on individual, organizational and community health. This course will examine commonly used substances in Manitoba and Canada. The relational practice approach is foundational to the provision of safe, ethical, holistic care to individuals, families and communities impacted by the effects of substance use. The link between trauma, culture, stigma, and the social determinants of health in relation to substance use across diverse populations will be explored.
