Description

This Bookkeeping and Small Business Office Certificate program is designed to meet the office needs of small businesses.  This program will enable you to carry out the receptionist, secretarial, bookkeeping and payroll functions normally found in small businesses.  As a graduate you will also be qualified for entry-level positions in larger businesses and the different levels of government. 

 

 

Admission Requirements

Regular  Admission Requirements
To apply under the regular admission requirements, you must have your Manitoba Grade 12.
 
Special Admission Requirements
If you are at least 19 years of age on or before September 30 in your year of registration, have been out of high school for a minimum of one year, and you do not meet the regular admission requirements, you may apply under the special admission requirements.

Learn about the practical aspects of bookkeeping and accounting. Topics include basic internal control procedures, the recording process, ledgers and trial balances, financial statements and closing entries, cash and how to control it, accounts receivable, inventory, and salaries.

More Information

This course is designed for new users or users with limited experience.  Topics covered will include:  setting up a new company file, working with bank and credit card accounts, creating invoices, receiving payments, entering and paying bills, recording inventory, setting up petty cash, tracking profit and expenses, customizing invoices and reports, running reports, accounting for NSF cheques, setting up payroll, condensing company files, integrating MS Word and Excel, setting up multiple users and security, and more. Please bring a flash drive to class. Recommended:  Computers – Intro or a good working knowledge of computers.

More Information

By using Sage 50 software, you will develop an understanding on how to enter business transactions into the general ledger, prepare and adjust entries, and print out financial statements. Sage 50 is used for accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and inventory.

Develop the basic principles of business writing and discuss topics such as: standard business formats, the ability to write clear, readable letters and memos.  It also reviews correct grammar and usage and how to improve effectiveness as a speaker.

More Information

Increase your knowledge of computer fundamentals using a current Windows operating system. Content includes an introduction to the Internet and common Microsoft Applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

If you are taking courses by distance delivery, you must have access to a computer with the appropriate Microsoft Office software and Microsoft Windows 7, 8 or 10.

More Information

Become familiar with spreadsheet concepts, use basic features, obtain skills for further training and be able to use Excel 2016 in the workplace environment. Topics covered include using worksheets to make decisions, planning, building, testing and documenting worksheets, formatting and printing, functions, formulas and absolute references, charts and graphing, solving complex problems, and working with multiple worksheets and workbooks.

* This course is recommended for students with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows. Students who need to upgrade their computer skills prior to taking this class should take COMP-1313 Introduction to Computers.

Distance Delivery:
Students must have access to a computer with the appropriate Microsoft Office software.
Excel 2016 and Excel 2016 Advanced are not suitable for use with Mac computer software
Required textbook sold separately and can be purchased at the Campus Store.

Learn the basics of word processing along with some advanced Word 2016 features. Skill areas covered will include: basic word processing, formatting and editing; inserting and customizing pictures and graphics; formatting for multiple page documents; utilizing wizards and templates; adding charts, tables, columns, and mail merging for letters, envelopes and labels.

Acquire knowledge of payrolls, earnings and deductions, methods of payment, employment standards and termination of employees. Learn about government remittances, allowances, taxable benefits, employer levies and government reporting.

MATH-1039Basic Business MathematicsRPL
More Information

Develop the mathematical skills necessary to handle basic quantitative material found in other courses. Review basic arithmetic and algebraic operations. Study the application ratio, proportion, and percent to business problems, such as commissions and fees, taxes, and income statement analysis. Become familiar with handling financial mathematics topics like simple interest and discount, bank discounts, equivalent payment and negotiable instruments. Emphasis will be on main concepts rather than arithmetic.

PRAC-1048Workplace Practicum
More Information

Upon completion of classroom work, students will be placed with a host organization for three weeks of on-the-job training.  This will familiarize students with the routines of a business office.

Students who obtain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 or better will graduate with honours. Students will not be granted more than 75% of credit requirements for graduation through transfer of credit. Students with any course failures within their program of study will not be eligible for the honours designation.
